Ships, cannons, keen blades, yes, Pirates of the Caribbean has returned with it's fifth installment, continuing the franchise. It has recently been titled Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, arriving in theaters as of 2017.
The...unusual Captain Jack Sparrow has returned once again played by the gifted Johnny Depp joined by other familiar actors and actresses. These stars include Javier Bardem, Kaya Scodelario, Brenton Thwaites and Golshifteh Farahani. Well known for playing Theresa in The Maze Runner, Kaya Scodelario has been announced as the female leading role for the upcoming film, while the star of The Giver, Brenton Thwaites, has a part that is currently in speculation, though is thought to be Will Turner's (Orlando Bloom) son, however there is no guarantee that this is true. Javier Bardem has been given the villain role in the film, though this should be familiar to him as he played the antagonist in Skyfall. Lastly, Golshifteh Farahani from Rosewater has an unclear role that will hopefully be revealed soon. Geoffry Rush shall maintain his role as Barbossa, as well as Kevin R. McNally as Joshamee Gibbs. Hopefully there will be some additional familiar faces in this movie portraying some...abnormal characters.
On the business side of things, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been supremely successful with the box office. The series is considered the 9th highest-grossing film series of all time and was the first franchise with one film that grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Currently, it has collected over $3.73 billion worldwide.
The film has a budget of $250 million dollars, and relative to the funds from the previous releases, this movie could be a massive hit in the film industry. The producer; Jerry Bruckheimer, and the directors; Joachim Ronning, and Espen Sandburg, could greatly increase their fame and notoriety just for working on the 5th Pirates installment.
The film's release was initially planned for 2015, it was postponed until 2016, and now currently 2017 due to script and budget issues, though the principle photography began in 2015 and the pre-production was in progress as of 2011, which included Terry Rossio writing the script. For whatever reason, Jeff Nathanson was hired to write a new script in early 2013, suggesting that the movie would be released in 2015. Queensland, Australia is where the 5th movie will be filmed. Consisting of long coastlines and the tourist attraction, the Great Barrier Reef. Queensland is an excellent choice for filming Caribbean movie.
Though not much of the story line has been revealed seeing as the movie isn't being released for another 2 years, there have been some small descriptions leaked by the cast and crew.
The plot has been described as:
"Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow fins the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control of the seas.
Brenton Thwaites hasn't released much information as he doesn't have much knowledge about the story himself claiming "They're quite tight about that stuff", though he was able to give us a vague outline:
“It’s about a young man who wants to reconnect with his father, Davy Jones. There’s a curse that prevents him from doing that. I think it’s about how he goes around that and tries to fix it and he has to save his dad. I’m looking forward to it. It’ll be a lot of fun!”
The Pirates of the Caribbean movies are some of the most successful Disney films, considering the amount of revenue they have brought the company. We'll just have to wait and see if the crew releases more information about the plot and characters in the near future. The small quotes that have been revealed are very unsatisfying and spikes the curiosity of fans worldwide. It's thrilling to see familiar names on the cast list and having them give us inside information about the production of the film, hopefully they will be portraying some interesting roles in the pirate universe that will be remembered as viewers walk out of the theater.
